Report on the Pilot Implementation of Participatory Land Use Planning (PLUP) in Chin State

Participatory land use planning (PLUP) is used as a mechanism to catalyst on-the-ground adoption of SLM and SFM models in those pilot sites. Built on the last year’s process and lessons learned in the Central Dry Zone, SLM project has supported the villagers of Khui Ring, Wun Ma Thu village tract, Mindat township in mapping their village territory and deciding on their future land
use strategies and land use zoning with two main purposes: to give them a tool with which they can make claims over their community territories for their land uses and to push concerned government departments for recognition of their land and forest rights.

The piloting process also provides local communities with an opportunity to discuss their current land use practices, issues and challenges that they face, opportunities to improve their household income and livelihood through adoption of commercial agriculture, to collectively make decision about their future land use plan and formulate corresponding rules and regulations agreed by the
whole community.
